Chlorine and Chloramines

Most of us use chlorinated water in our homes.  We drink it, shower in it. It’s because local water treatment systems use chlorine to kill germs in the water. Chlorine is beneficial to us in one hand. In the other hand, while preventing water-borne diseases, 'clean' tap water also can cause more adverse health effects like:  itchy skin, asthma, immune disorders, cancer, birth defects and so on. Chlorine is like a time bomb slowly hatching health problems! So we need to remove chlorine before it hits us. Let’s take a deep look at what chlorine and chlroamines are.

As mentioned above, chlorine is mostly used to disinfect public water systems because of its toxic effect on harmful germs, bacteria and disease-causing organisms. The chlorine is defined as a toxic gas, and has been used as a chemical weapon. With greater exposure to toxic chlorinated water supplies, the potential health dangers we face become more real.

A report in the American Journal of Public Health linked chlorine to significant increases in certain types of cancer and stated that "up to two-thirds of the harmful exposure was due to skin absorption and inhalation while showering."

During the bathing process, the chlorine evaporates out of the water and is inhaled. This toxic gas can also spread through the house and be inhaled by others. Some reports claim that as much chlorine enters the body by inhaling steamy chlorinated shower vapors or through the open pores of the skin as that which enters the body by drinking chlorinated water during the entire day. This increased exposure to the adverse effects of chlorine by household residents can be from 6 to 100 times more than medically recommended.

Chlorine also attacks the skin and skin oils, creating a dermal drying effect. Shower water can also cause or worsen skin irritations and rashes as well as drying the skin. Showering and bathing in chlorinated water will also result in the breakage of hair shafts. Because chlorine is absorbed into the body through the skin, additional physical problems can ensue. Chlorinated water can also irritate eyes, leaving them red, itchy and burning. Inhaling the toxic steam can aggravate the sinuses and lungs.

Chloramines, although a more stable compound, contains chlorine and ammonia and is also used to control bacteria in water systems. Its harmful effects cause the same dangers as pure chlorine.

Other than the obvious health benefits of showering in chemical free water, the cosmetic benefits are even more noticeable. Anyone who has ever gone swimming in a chlorinated pool can relate to the harsh drying effect that chlorine has on your skin and hair.

Without the effects of chlorine and other chemicals found in tap water, your skin and hair retain moisture more effectively for a younger healthier look and feel.

Chlorine: Added to all municipal water supplies, this disinfectant hardens arteries, destroys proteins in the body, irritates skin and sinus conditions, and aggravates asthma, allergies, and respiratory problems.

Chloroform: This powerful by product of chlorination causes excessive free radical formation (accelerated aging!), normal cells to mutate, and cholesterol to oxidize. It is a known carcinogen!
